An Extra Hour of Sleep?

An Extra Hour of Sleep?  How come everyone is so tired then?

First, in our 30+ years of experience teaching kids, this can be a terribly tough week for children when it comes to extra-curricular activities. The time change can really deal some children a hard blow. They can become tired and cranky! They may not want to come to karate class and say things like “It’s no fun. It’s boring. It’s too hard. It’s too loud.” etc.  All of this because of an extra hour of sleep.

They may even say things like it’s too cold and dark out. They are correct. Aren’t you glad they are in martial arts instead of soccer!  I always feel sorry when I drive by a rain soaked soccer field watching the kids, coaches and parents freezing.  Don’t get me wrong, I have some great Black Belt students who take martial arts to enhance their extra-curricular activities like soccer.

It is okay for them to maybe miss one class this week, but don’t let it go beyond that. Regular attendance is the key to learning the value of discipline and building good habits.  If they start to complain, simply tell them they will have to go to class and tell Master Karpiuk their complaint. Remember, they are children and don’t always know what is best for them. We need to care for them in a loving way as parents.

How about you as a parent?  The older I get, an extra hour of sleep sounds really good.  But this week I’ve found myself extremely tired and not sleeping well.  To help, try to stick to the same bed-time routine.  Don’t watch sports right before trying to go to sleep.  Especially if you are a Maple Leafs fan!  You definitely won’t get an extra hour of sleep!
